Got rid of a few older cows this week. Some were extremely old and haven’t had calves for a couple years. Others had physical problems. Hauling off old cows to the sale barn may seem a little harsh, but this is a farm, and feeding non producers all winter is expensive.
While on a walk recently, my wife “Honey Bunches” drew the attention of a few new mama cows. One in particular decided to show her dissapproval of the incursion by charging, snorting, and scaring poor honey to death! This is the same trick she tried on me a couple days before while I was fixing fence. A brave move for a bovine while I am considering which cows to sell. Luckily for this cow, I was using my portable corral elsewhere. She did recieve a new name, something I only do for cows that really catch my attention. Looking out the window I can see ol “Tri-Tip” munching on the green grass totally unaware of her good luck.
